BASKETBALL AT RADNOR
BOYS BASKETBALL 1957 - 1958
Main Line Media News: Ellis Dwyer went on to coach the Radnor High School boys’ basketball team for more than 30 years, where he posted a record of 524-232 and won 12 league championships and seven district titles. His teams also reached the eastern finals five times and the state final once, in 1960. Didn’t Radnor have to beat an undefeated Chester squad to win the district title in 1956?
Ralph Gray: Chester came into the 1956 district final with a 27-0 record, had Horace Walker, who was an All-American, and they had been picked to win the state title, but Radnor beat them in the district final down at the Palestra. Ellis Dwyer always preached intelligent play, and in the district final, he had center Doug Kistler [who went on to play in the NBA] bring the ball upcourt against Chester to bring out Horace Walker from under the basket.
Main Line Media News:That 1956 squad had some pretty prominent athletes on it, including Ted Dean, who went on to score the winning touchdown for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1960 NFL Championship game.
